Gecko Spirit Song: Audition on Monday, 26th of Sept

On Monday, the 26th of September my band and I are going to be auditioning my Gecko Spirit Song, so that we can hopefully perform it at an assembly. All of us (Bryce, Maisoon, Bharat and I) know each of our parts, so we should be accepted.

We will be performing my “gecko version” of Song 2 by Blur, as previously explained in a past post.

Founder’s Day Performance – Hero

On September 13th, a band composed of Bharat Kholsa, Camie Raguin, Maison Firag, Damien Martin, and myself performed Hero by Nickelback in celebration of the establishment and anniversary of the Overseas School of Colombo.

Founder's Day Assembly - Hero by Nickelback

The band and I were asked on behalf of the school to perform a song that would fit with the occasion. Our performance was as perfect as we wanted, since we were notified about the performance one week in advance. However, I feel that we did a fine job under the given circumstances.

Library Service: Session 4

For this Library Service meeting we met for the last 10 minutes to finalize the details about the movie night:

– reconfirmed the date of the movie night (Late November)
– food and drinks preparation
– jobs for our service members on the day
– advertising (posters/news letter blurb, movie promo at assembly)

As mentioned earlier in the previous post, we did not choose a specific movie title. After today’s meeting with the others, we arrived at two titles. “Rush Hour 2” and “Kung Fu Panda” There are two titles because we are not quite sure what the ratings for each film is, we’ll have to check with the principal to see if we are able to view such films at school, in the theater.

Library Service: Session 3

For this week, on top of our normal routine of stacking and organizing books and shelves, Charity and I held a small group discussion during Library Service. The purpose of this meeting was to brainstorm ideas for a fund raising event, which the proceeds would go to a reading foundation that is well-known throughout Sri Lanka.

After discussing various ideas, by majority of vote, we decided that we would host a “movie night” at OSC, as well as provided drinks and snacks.

The specific movie title has yet to be selected. (Will be updated in future a post)

A list of concessions that will be provided:
– Popcorn
– Brownies
– Cookies, cakes, pastries~
– Sushi
– Carbonated Drinks (Coke, Pepsi, SevenUp ect)

After School Schedule (Near Future)

I feel that I have been included into too many commitments due to the fact I participate in an activity every single day of the week. Here is my schedule:

Monday – Badminton
Tuesday – SAISA Football Practice
Wednesday – Band Practice
Thursday – CAS (Library Serivce)
Friday – SAISA Football Practice
Saturday – SAISA Football Practice

I hope to be able to continue this active schedule while performing my best at each of my committed activities.

Re-Joining Badminton (ASA)

This post is to announce that I will be returning to the after school activity of Badminton for the rest of the quarter. I still think that I could benefit from the ASA sport, because it is a means of stress release as well as a good opportunity to improve my own playing ability.

Movie Creation + Video Editing (Adobe After Effects)

A small hobby of mine that has been with me for quite sometime is creating small videos with the video editing software, “Adobe After Effects”. I think that creating movies is a really fun hobby since there are practically no borders to them. The director of a movie can create anything through his mind’s eye.

I’ve been creating movies for about three years now, and I’ve never really thought of adding it as a part of my CAS Blog. But I suppose that it could count as Creativity since it isn’t part of any curriculum and I’m not getting money from it.

I will see if I can post some of my film work on my blog in the near future*

Football Training (Soccer) Possibly… SAISA?

This post is to announce that I’ll be joining student football practices at OSC. I feel that it’ll keep me healthy and give me plenty of Action to talk about in my CAS Blog.

Today was my first football practice, even though it was raining for the majority of the time. It felt good to be in uniform again, along with the feel of kicking footballs into the nets. I’d like to think that this will be a permanent hobby of mine. If I do stick with football, and I’m able to get my fitness up; I may consider trying out for SAISA Football 2011.

I think it’s fitting that since I’m starting a new challenge and hobby, it would be good to create some realistic goals.

I would like to increase my awareness of my own strengths and have areas for growth, while undertaking new challenges. I aim to work collaboratively with others (my team and my coaches), while showing the utmost perseverance and commitment to my training. Hopefully if I follow these goals I’ll have developed new skills by the time SAISA begins.

I’ll be posting about my footballing progress in later posts*

Gecko Spirit Song! (Creativity)

GECKO SPIRIT! Something that we apparently need more of at OSC… I decided to take on the challenge of creating a Gecko Spirit Song. It wasn’t a pre-planned type of event, it just happened to occur.

My Gecko song that I have written is more of a parody to Song 2 by Blur. All I did was write some “spiritual” lyrics/words that relate to OSC, Colombo. (You can find the lyrics down below)

Anyways, to make this an official part of my CAS Blog, I want to perform this at an assembly in the near future. I’ve already spoken with Mr. Shipely, and he said that I would need to audition in front of the “assembly committee” before the 23rd of September. This shouldn’t be a problem, I just need to find time to practice this with a band. I’ve already spoken to a few students around OSC and they seem like they would be fine with performing it with me.

I’ll be posting my progress in the near future.

Here are the lyrics to my song:

Gecko Spirit Song – By Skylor Knoll
Actual song: Blur – Song 2 (Gecko Parody)

(Start the “Gecko Clapping” so that it fits with this introduction*)

GECKOS!
GECKOS!
GECKOS!
GECKOS!

We are the geckos.
From Colombo-
We represent
Our team spirit
Yeah!

GECKOS!
When I see that gold medal! GECKOS!
I’ll never let it ever go GECKOS!
I’ll try my best to play and win!
When I get knocked down I’ll find a way…
…To get back up and play!

Back for round two
We are one school
We are the best
Don’t you ever forget

GECKOS!
When I see that gold metal! GECKOS!
I’ll never let it ever go GECKOS!
I’ll try my best to play and win!
When I get knocked down I’ll find a way…
…To get back up and play!

(Return to the introduction “Gecko Clapping” until you want to end)

Library Service: Session 2

Today’s Library Service went according to plan, the students went to their designated areas and worked on shelving/organizing. I’m actually a little relieved that the younger students (Grade 6) were able to learn how to catalog as quickly as they did.

The main activity that Charity and I brought up was, “Book Week”. Book week is a program that is organized by Mrs. Reina and Library Service to promote the use of text resources and more noticeably READING BOOKS!

In a group meeting, Charity and I discussed some of the possibilities for this year’s Book Week, such as “Poem Day” or “Comic Day” and so on. However, we both agreed before hand that it would be important to allow the members of library service also bring fresh ideas and make a contribution to this project. After a short moment to brainstorm ideas here is what some of the members of library service proposed:

– Poem Day
– Favorite Author Day
– Comic Day
– Science Fiction Day
– Fiction Day
– Favorite Book Day
– Favorite Cartoon/Anime

These are just some of the ideas that our group has. I’m very interested to see what other creative ideas they have.

Charity and I also explained about the different jobs that are required for Book Week. Eg. Publicity (Posters/Powerpoint/Movie)

For this year, Library Service is going to try to work with the SGA to collaboratively organize Book Week. (I’ll be updating this in future posts)
