CAS 2010 – 2011 Reflection (Grade 11)

The end of the academic year at OSC  is a time when one evaluates his or her self goals that were set before starting the journey, therefore it is fitting that I self evaluate my own goals that I created back in September 2010. My first goal was to be a part of the Library Service, after school program which I was successfully a member of the entire year. I was also selected along with another student to be the head of the activity for the next academic year. When linking this goal to the CAS program’s criteria I can say that I have work on the following areas mentioned within the requirements. I have increased my own awareness of my strengths and areas for growth through the different activities within library service. Since Library Service is requires different task such as stacking books, cataloging books, sorting, distributing texts to and from classes, it was quickly made clear which of them I excelled at.

Secondly, I believe I have undertaken new challenges during my time in Library service which can be exemplified when I accepted the role of becoming a leader of the CAS activity, regardless of the fact I had less experience than others in our group.  Planning and initiating actives fits well with working together with others since Library Service is a team based task. We all work together to get the job done, it’s more efficient and it also keeps the atmosphere of the library more lively. From my personal perspective, I think that working with others has made Library Service effective at its job, but it does not feel like we’re doing a highly difficult task. I took the initiative to propose suggestions about ways to improve Library Service and helped plan our CAS Blog for our afterschool activity.  I was also willing to help out with anything that needed to be done, I was on time to each session, and I believe I attended 95% of the Library Service sessions; therefore I believe I definitely showed perseverance and commitment.

During my CAS activity I often considered the ethical implications of my action and as far as I know there were no problems with the way I participated and contributed; but if there were any, I would have definitely been willing to correct myself in order to make everyone benefit from our experience in Library Service. Finally, Library Service has allowed me to develop new skills especially organizational based ones. Working in this CAS activity was improved my self-organizational skill both within school and when at home. In conclusion, by being a part of the CAS service, “Library Service” I was able to touch base with 7 out of the 1 CAS requirement criteria. The only section that was not fully fulfilled was, “Engaged with issues of global importance”. I believe it is understandable that Library Service does not fit this criteria since our CAS activity is centered around helping out our community. If we were given the chance to help out with other school’s libraries, I’m sure that none of the participants in Library Service would object.

I believe that I fulfilled the majority of my goals during this academic year. I was able to complete seven of the eight criteria, from the Creativity, Action and Service requirements. I’m happy with how this year turned out, and knowing all of the areas that I could improve on, I feel confident in tackling the next year.
