Reflection of Battle of the Bands: Master of Ceremonies

The Battle of the Bands was a fun and entertaining night of musical performances. I know that the Cleft Palate service group was unsure of whether this event would be a success or not, but they were surprised with its popularity. In addition to the band performances, they held a raffle draw (which I was in charge of) with many different prizes, such as gift cards and dinners at fancy restaurants. Although there were no rehearsals before the show, the other MCs and I were able to improvise our lines and coordinate well.

This was a great experience for a number of reasons: I enjoy performing on a stage but more importantly it helped me build my leadership and performing skills and gain confidence in front of an audience.

Library Service: Drink Distribution at Battle of the Bands

The library service drink distribution at the Battle of the Bands turned out to be a great success. We made around Rs. 21,000 and donated it to “Room to Read”, an international charity organization that promotes literacy in Sri Lanka. Although we had organized the schedule with designated time slots for work shifts, by the end of the first hour, we all joined in to help sell drinks because of the overwhelming number of customers wanting to purchase drinks. The clean-up after the show was massive but we all joined together to accomplish it. Everyone was helpful. I personally wasn’t able to always be at the drinks selling station because of my duties as MC, but I helped out when I was free.

Library Service: Session 10

In addition to our usual activities, today we held a group meeting about our upcoming fund raising event, which will be drink distribution at the Battle of the Bands charity event. We decided about our schedule and coordinated who would be in charge of what, in regards to purchasing the supplies.

Saisa Football: Ready to Travel

All the past weeks of training have led to this moment. I am ready to travel to Dhaka, Bangladesh for SAISA 2011. We will be staying for five days to compete in matches. I am feeling a little nervous about going head-to-head with other football teams but overall, I’m very excited about the trip.

MC at Battle of the Bands: Update

I am concerned about my role as MC in the upcoming Battle of the Bands because I have not been updated about the situation, especially about my lines and having a rehearsal. I don’t feel comfortable about this because I prefer to be well informed and prepared for such an event. If worse comes to worse, I will just have to improvise my lines when I am on stage.

Library Service: Session 9

Today at library service we continued with our daily routine of organizing and stacking books. My co-leader and I also worked on updating the library service CAS blog.

Saisa Football: Update

SAISA football is going well. My personal athletic skills have improved dramatically and I am feeling more confident when I am playing. It’s hard to believe how far I have come. I’ve also lost a considerable amount of body weight, (which was one of my motivations to join football) so I am feeling very excited about these beneficial changes from the football practices.

Master of Ceremonies (MC) at Battle of the Bands (November 26th)

I was once again approached by the Battle of the Bands service group to be the Master of Ceremonies for their charity event on Nov. 26, 2011. I said yes because I thought it would be an excellent way to build on my public speaking skills and stage presence and to indirectly help poor children.

Ushering Service for Fiddler on the Roof (Friday, 18th of November)

Today during drama class I decided to volunteer to be an usher during the upcoming all-school play, Fiddler on the Roof, which will take place on Nov. 17 and 18, 2011. I was assigned to be on duty on Nov. 18th. My duties will include taking tickets at the door, showing audience members to their seats and making sure that late arrivers do not interrupt the performance.

Library Service Session: 7 + 8

During these two sessions, we stacked the library books and organized them. As senior leaders for the library service, Charity and I have been discussing about who should take the leadership role for this program after we graduate. We have identified one or two strong candidates and have been training them.
