Cleft Palate: Battle of the Bands – Auditions

The CAS service cleft palate wanted to hold a “Battle of the Bands” charity event in order to raise money for operations for poor children who could not afford cleft palate operations. To determine which bands would perform at this event, I was selected as one of the judges for the audition process. In addition to selecting the performing bands, I was also in charge of technical support (sound check etc.) during the auditions.

In this experience, I assumed a leadership role and worked collaboratively with others. After selecting the top bands from the Colombo area, I am sure that the show will be packed with spectacular talent!

UN Day: Workshop Supervisor

Today I was part of the annual UN Day event at our school. My role was to be a “Co-supervisor” at a child rights workshop. The workshop was designed primarily around group based activities. Some of them were:

• prioritizing child rights issues
• conducting mock debates on child rights
• brainstorming viable solutions to reduce or eliminate child abuse

This experience taught me how to work collaboratively with others, helped me build new skills and leadership abilities and increased my knowledge of child rights issues. It is important to recognize that this type of workshop has global significance because it is a contemporary, modern problem which is shared by all people.

SAISA Volleyball: Aftermath

SO CLOSE! We made the finals! After 14 years of not having a volleyball team, the OSC Lady Geckos were able to place second out of 6 schools. That as itself is an amazing accomplishment and I feel they should walk away from this competition with their heads held high and proud.

It is unfortunate that we lost to Dhaka, but I speak for everyone at the final that, that was perhaps the most exciting and lively volleyball match any of us has ever seen.

During this weekend of volleyball I was able to meet many new people and make new friends. I’m happy that I had this experience to interact with others, and watch Volleyball!

GOOD JOB GECKOS!

SAISA Volleyball: Cheering + Support

I think that one thing that separates OSC from other schools is our team spirit. I was able to witness how strong our team spirit was during the entire SAISA Volleyball weekend. There was not a single instance where no one showed up of and OSC match.

Our cheers were loud, and powerful resonating throughout the Gecko Gym. I feel that we were a large factor that gave our volleyball team the support they needed to do as well as they did.

It’s very heartening to see a community such as OSC come together from our separate lives to support one common goal.

SAISA Volleyball: Opening Assembly

SAISA Volleyball! For the opening assembly of the tournament I was personally asked by Mr. Shipley to participate in a little “spirit-builder” to show our school spirit.

I was a partial MC in the way that I work with Mr. Shipley to hear the elementary welcoming cheers to the other SAISA Schools. For example, I would go up to the children and ask if they had a cheer, and allowed them to show their team spirit in front of the school. I would then congratulate them and move onto the next.

It was quite fun to be able to have the chance to do something like that. It felt good to do something on behalf of our school. I’d enjoy doing something like that in the future that involves the whole school.

GO GECKOS!

Football Practice: Update

Our under 19’s football practice is going well. I feel that I am earning valuable experience with each practice. I can also think my level of energy rising slowly; which is a great success. I’m glad that I decided to partake in football practices.

I still need to work on a list of things though:

– shooting accuracy
– think and react with greater speed
– agility

I will be working on these aspects of my game-play in the coming weeks.

Library Service: Session 5

This are moving nicely in Library Service, the group this year is extremely diligent. Since we have two leaders, Charity and I, our adviser Mrs.Reina is able to focus on other aspects of the library.

It has been awhile since we have documented our CAS activity, so I think it would be good to photograph our service, for our CAS Blogs, school awareness and yearbook. I’ll have someone bring a camera to the next Library Service.

As for the movie night, we still need to speak about the economic side of things. Ticket prices, food/drink prices.

It would also be a good idea to organize the booking of the auditorium ahead of time, so there are no complications when November comes around.

Gecko Spirit Song: Postponed

This post is to state that my band and I were not able to audition since one of our members caught a disease that prevented him from attending school. I spoke with Mr. Shipley (Audition Head) and he said that we wouldn’t cancel the performance, but rather postpone it to a later date. I am a little disappointed by this turn of events, since we were all prepared to perform it. However, it is not a large problem, we will just try again in the near future.
