Library Service (Meeting with Advisor)

On Thursday August 25th, Charity and I met with Mrs. Reina to plan out the schedule for Library Service 2011-2012. We were able to jump to the more important aspects of library service, since Charity and I had creates a schedule a week before (during the CAS leader meeting on the previous Thursday, August 18th).
Mrs. Reina inspected our plans for the upcoming year, and she gave us her input:

– We should have an online system to keep individual library service memebr reflections/experiences. (More efficient than hard-copies, less paper wasted, and easier to transfer to report cards/progress reports)
– We should try to salvage the old Library Service CAS blog, and have one HS member of our activity maintain it. (Allows us to present or progress to the Key Club as well as the OSC community)

– We should ask the SGA for help, in sponsoring the Library Serivce’s activity, “Book Week” (Cost, advertising and so on.)

– She thought our ideas of, “Comic Day, Cosplay Day, Poem Day…”  were creative and definitively worth looking into to promote reading.

Other than those suggestions, Mrs. Reina was content with our plans for the upcoming academic year; and with her approval Charity and I are ready to lead Library Service 2011-2011, starting on Septemeber 1, 2011.

CAS vs Drama Commitments

This post is to notify that I may have trouble fulfilling my CAS requirements during the beginning of my senior year at OSC. This is due to my conflicting schedule between CAS and the Secondary Drama production, “Fiddler on the Roof”. Obviously, there is a problem if I can not maintain my role as Leader of Library Service, especially since I volunteered for the position last year. On the other hand, I am an IBDP Theater Arts HL Student who should be involved with the Secondary Production.

…It is unfortunate that such a choice has to be made, especially since both offer fantastic experience; however I believe that the organizers of the ASA (After School Activities) will rectify this scheduling conflict, since there are numerous students that are in a situation similar to that of mine. I will comment on this post when I know more about the situation.

Photography/Documentation? Pictures?

I’ve decided to add another goal: “To add more photography from my CAS experiences/activities during the upcoming academic year”. I’ll make it a priority to add pictures (that are relevant)  within the same weekly basis as my wall posts and content updates.

I feel that having a photographic reference helps one to better understand what I am doing in IBDP CAS/ Service.

Library Service Goals for CAS 2012 (Service)

As the leaders of Library Service, Charity Dowers and I will be planning/organizing the Service program for the duration of our enrollment in 12th grade at OSC. Therefore our goals/plan for the academic year are:

-Limit the number of students in Library Service to 8-10 students to not overcrowd the library and make the workload last long enough until 3:30.

-Divide the students into two groups

Grades 6-8 will be supervised by Charity ( 4 or 5 students no more than 5)

Grades 9-12 will be supervised by Skylor (3 or 4 students, he will personally choose them)

Middle school grades will be in charge of organizing non-fiction books (they are easier to sort because of their numerical placement)

High school grades will be charge of organizing fiction books, ordering the magazines, and updating the library service blog each session. Also take pictures for the blog.

Library Service Daily Routine

  1. Attendance
  2. Separate the two groups and organize what needs to be organized
  3. End the session with a ‘good job’ and ‘thank you’

Library Service First Day *

  1. Speech about library service (maybe take some pictures)
  2. Cover what is expected in Library Service: ATTENDANCES (3 strikes)
  3. Learn names of each student
  4. Explain how pizza party works
  5. Try and set up the service blog

Book Week (Will probably come up with more activities that are “Community-based”

  • More publicity –have the service make a few posters
  • School newsletters, emails
  • Assembly presentations (videos)
  • Manga/Comic Day
  • More reading days (10 minutes)
  • Quotes from famous authors about reading
  • Publish creative writing
  • COSPLAY

Student Reflection/ Student reports

Around the end of November when the first semester is ending we will have students write a short reflection on their time in library service.  Also Charity and I will be writing student reports on the students’ performances in the service. I will write the reports for high school students and Charity will write for the middle school students.

CAS Goals for Grade 12 (2011-2012)

The beginning of my senior year at OSC, marks the beginning of my final year in the CAS program. In a fashion to that of my goals for CAS in 11th grade, I will try my hardest to achieve the 8 expectations from the IBDP’s syllabus. They are:

  • Increased their awareness of their own strengths and areas for growth
  • Undertaken new challenges
  • Planned and initiated activities
  • Worked collaboratively with others
  • Shown perseverance and commitment in their activities
  • Engaged with issues of global importance
  • Considered the ethical implications of their actions
  • Developed new skills

However in addition to these old and familiar goals, I have decided to create a set of goals; goals that are personal and specific to only me. Here are my goals for the upcoming academic year:

I will be involved with MORE ACTION during and after school.

I will be involved with more COMMUNITY events.

I will try to be a ROLE MODEL for those around me.

I will UPDATE and USE my CAS blog more regularly than last year.

In conclusion, my ambitions are reasonable, and my goals are reachable. I hope to make this last year meaningful to myself and to those around me by my Creativity, my Action and my Serivce; here at OSC

2011-2012 CAS (Creativity, Action, Service)

I will be updating my CAS blog on a weekly basis (Sundays). Therefore, the amount of text will be lower, but the input from myself will be more frequent and up to date.
